Our case study involves a patient who experienced nerve damage after a relatively brief exposure to lead, resulting from improper use of a hair dye specifically on their beard. The damage primarily affected the sensory nerves and was characterized by axonal neuropathy. This neuropathy was found to be strongly associated with elevated levels of lead in the patient’s blood, exceeding three times the upper limit of normal. It is noteworthy that the patient’s neuropathy had a predominant sensory component, which was an unexpected finding in this context. This case raises questions about the potential neurological risks associated with certain hair dye products and the importance of safe application practices.

Can hair products have an impact on the brain? While there isn’t an extensive body of research available on this topic, it is conceivable that certain chemicals present in hair products might enter the bloodstream and potentially influence brain function indirectly.
