When Not To Use An Nd Filter?

When considering the usage of ND filters, it’s important to note that most ND filters, whether variable or fixed, primarily reduce visible light but have minimal effect on infrared light. This means they are not suitable for photographing the sun. It’s worth mentioning that welding glass, specifically the darker shades, can be used for sun photography because it actually blocks more infrared radiation than visible light. This is the reason why I sought an ND filter with 18 stops of light reduction. This information was shared on July 5th, 2022.

Are Nd Filters Good For Low Light?

Are ND filters effective for low-light photography? ND filters are a valuable tool when shooting in low-light conditions, as they enable you to achieve more pronounced motion blur effects. These filters work by reducing the amount of light entering the camera, typically by blocking 2, 3, or 4 f-stops of light. This reduction in light allows you to slow down your shutter speed without overexposing your image. As a result, you can capture stunning motion blur effects even in dimly lit environments. This technique is particularly useful for creating artistic and captivating low-light photographs. (Note: The date “28th May 2020” does not appear to be relevant to this topic and has been omitted.)

Where Do You Use Nd Filters?

Neutral density (ND) filters find widespread application in photography, primarily to achieve the effect of blurring motion in various scenarios. These filters are especially useful when capturing subjects with continuous motion, such as flowing water in rivers or streams, rainfall, cascading waterfalls, or the bustling activity of people on a busy urban street. The reason ND filters are essential in such situations is that they enable photographers to use wider apertures without overexposing the image. This wider aperture allows for a longer exposure time, which, in turn, creates the desired motion blur effect in the photograph. So, ND filters play a crucial role in controlling exposure and enhancing creativity when photographing dynamic scenes with motion.

ND filters are also popular among portrait photographers who want to achieve a more dramatic shallow depth of field. These filters will help to blur the background, making the subject more prominent. Most ND filters (variable or not) reduce visual light but do little to infra red so shouldn’t be used for photographing the sun (welding glass actually blocks more IR than visual light so the darker shades are safe for the sun – the reason I wanted 18 stops above). These ND filters can be used to create stronger motion blur effects in low light. By blocking 2, 3, and 4 f-stops of light, these filters allow you to slow your shutter speed down, without overexposing your image, to create beautiful motion blur.
