In 2024, all ships must comply with the D-2 standard for ballast water management treatment systems. The specific deadline for compliance varies and is determined by the ship’s flag State. However, no ship is allowed to operate without meeting this standard after 8 September 2024. This requirement ensures that ships adhere to approved ballast water treatment systems, safeguarding marine ecosystems from invasive species and promoting environmental protection in the maritime industry.

The Ballast Water Management Convention, aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of shipping by controlling the spread of harmful aquatic organisms through ballast water, established the D2 standard for treatment systems. This convention required new ships to install and comply with the D2 standard starting from September 8, 2017, once the Convention had entered into force. The D2 standard specifies that these treatment systems must ensure that only minimal levels of viable organisms remain in the water after treatment, thus reducing the ecological harm caused by shipping activities.

The D2 requirement for ballast water management, as outlined in Regulation D-2 Ballast Water Performance Standard, sets specific criteria for ships engaged in ballast water management to ensure the environmentally safe discharge of ballast water. To meet this requirement, ships must discharge ballast water with fewer than 10 viable organisms per cubic meter that are equal to or larger than 50 micrometers in minimum dimension. Additionally, they must also discharge fewer than 10 viable organisms per milliliter that are smaller than 50 micrometers in minimum dimension.
