It’s important to note that there are two distinct trails leading to this popular destination. As a reserve park ranger at Lake Poway, I want to emphasize that hikers have the option of choosing between these two trails to reach Potato Chip Rock. How high above ground is Potato Chip Rock? Potato Chip Rock is perched atop a mountain, situated at an elevation ranging between 2,700 and 2,800 feet. To reach this iconic rock formation, hikers can embark on a journey that typically spans one to two hours. Potato Chip Rock itself is positioned approximately 100 feet below the mountain’s summit. One favored route to access the rock involves a 6.6-mile round-trip hike starting from the Lake Poway trailhead located to the west. This trail provides adventure seekers with the opportunity to experience the captivating beauty of the region while making their way to the famous Potato Chip Rock.
