Why were Furbies banned? In 1999, the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) took the unusual step of prohibiting Furbies within its headquarters. This ban stemmed from the NSA’s strict policies against photography and audio-visual recording equipment on its premises. The agency’s concern was that these seemingly innocent toys could inadvertently capture and repeat sensitive and classified information. Consequently, Furbies were seen as a potential security risk, prompting their exclusion from NSA facilities. The fate of Furbies, the Tamagotchi-inspired robotic toys, has seen several phases over the years. Initially, they soared in popularity with over 40 million units sold within their first three years. However, around 2007, Furbies disappeared from store shelves. They made a comeback in 2012, receiving a digital-age makeover, and various iterations followed, including the introduction of baby Furblings. Nonetheless, production eventually came to a halt in 2018. As of April 6, 2023, it appears that there have been no further developments regarding the production or release of Furbies.
